Io-Interactive today confirmed layoffs at the studio via Twitter.
Famous for creating the Hitman series of games, it was announced earlier this month that Io-Interactive’s owners – Square Enix – were parting ways with the studio and were looking for a potential buyer for them.
Io-Interactive was acquired by Square Enix in 2009 when they purchased Eidos – Io’s parent company.
It comes as a great surprise, as last year’s Hitman game was met with critical acclaim from both critics and players alike. Perhaps the episodic structuring of the game didn’t pan out in a way that Square Enix liked or the retail disc copies of the game didn’t sell as well as anticipated.
Either way, it’s a great shame. Here’s hoping the great talent at Io land back on their feet.
